24/7 Gateway Center
275 Pryor Street
Atlanta, Georgia 30303
404.215.6600
http://www.gatewayctr.org/

With an overarching goal of ending chronic homelessness in metropolitan Atlanta, the 24/7 Gateway Center is scheduled to open in summer 2005. The Center will serve an estimated 500 individuals per day and provide a continuum of services to the homeless including:
• beds, showers, food, and storage
• reunification with family
• drug treatment and prevention
• mental health and medical services
• job training
The Atlanta Union Mission will manage the facility under a joint agreement with The United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta. Vince Smith, the Mission’s Director of Community Relations and Senior Chaplain, will direct the Center.
The United Way came aboard early in the process that led to creation of the Center. At the request of Mayor Shirley Franklin, the United Way formed a Commission of Atlanta leaders to study the problem of homelessness. The result is the Blueprint to End Homelessness in Atlanta in Ten Years. 24/7 Gateway is the flagship project under the Blueprint.
At the heart of the effort is collaboration among a number of regional organizations that recognize the need to aggressively address homelessness. The service providers, in addition to the Atlanta Union Mission, are Covenant House Georgia, GlenCastle Constructors, North Avenue Presbyterian Church, Project Open Hand/Atlanta, SafeHouse Outreach, Samaritan House/Café 458, Saint Joseph’s Mercy Care Services, The Atlanta Collaborative Kitchen/TACK, and Travelers Aid of Metropolitan Atlanta.
The Center will be housed in the former city pretrial detention facility at Garnett and Pryor Streets.
For additional information, contact Vince Smith, Executive Director at vince247@aol.com

A giant helium balloon has landed at Underground Atlanta! Atlanta’s newest attraction, the Comcast AeroBalloon will allow locals and visitors to soar high above and admire amazing views within a 20 mile radius of downtown Atlanta including the city’s skyline, Buckhead, and Stone Mountain. Up to 5 people at a time can travel upwards for a 10 minute adventure they will never forget.

Passengers will lift off in a wicker gondola to a breathtaking 360--degree panoramic altitude of 350 feet above the ground. The balloon will remain attached to its tether cable and is retrieved back to terra firma via its winch, located at ground level. “We are excited to be among the small number of U.S. cities that have an AeroBalloon,” stated Underground Atlanta General Manager William P. "Chick" Ciccaglione. “Atlantans and visitors will have a unique opportunity to see our great city from a different perspective.”

About the balloon: The balloon, simple and majestic in its appearance, is highly engineered. It is comprised of an outer skin, an internal ballonet, and a fan. Simply defined, it is a sphere shaped blimp. Its outer fabric is identical to the skin of a free--flying blimp seen daily flying over sporting events. The ballonet is a zero--porosity internal membrane filled with the inert gas helium. The ballonet dynamically expands and contracts with changes in altitude, barometric pressure, and/or temperature. The fan regulates this internally displaced air so that the balloon maintains its shape. AeroBalloon passengers will always be under the supervision of a certified AeroBalloon operator.

“We are thrilled to be able to bring the Comcast AeroBalloon to Atlanta,” said Douglas Hase, Founder of AeroBalloon USA. “We are very grateful to Underground Atlanta and the City of Atlanta for making this possible and look forward to making this a successful venture for both.”

Standing near the Fountain of Rings today, it is hard to believe that in 1993 the area around Centennial Olympic Park was a dilapidated section of the city. Billy Payne, the chief executive of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, spent hours gazing from his office balcony at empty lots and abandoned buildings. He soon envisioned a picturesque gathering space for visitors and residents during the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games, and for years to come. His vision came true in the form of Centennial Olympic Park, the largest new city park to be created in the United States in 20 years. Now the Park stands as a lasting legacy to the honor of the 1996 Games. Centennial Olympic Park is truly something to see.
