The
Titan Games
|
This
weekend Downtown Atlanta
hosts the Titan Games, the road to Athens for Americas elite
boxers, fencers, shot-putters, wrestlers, weightlifters and judo and taekwondo
athletes. The
Titan Games, isnt all the Olympic sports, just the most painful
ones. The event,
sponsored by Home Depot, will come to Philips Arena June 18-20. 180 athletes,
representing 12 counties, will compete in seven sports. This
unique mini-sports festival will feature simultaneous action in four battle
zones on the floor of Philips Arena. Competition will will be "U.S.
versus the world" format. Total prize money is $100,000.
The
Titan Games arrive at
Centennial Olympic Park today for an exciting day of competition,
interactive games and entertainment beginning at 11 a.m., and winding
down at 10:45 p.m.
The Titan Games bring a bevy of free Olympic activity to satisfy those
unable to make it to Athens for the Summer Games. Several musical acts
are scheduled to perform throughout the day including Rio Negro, Francine
Reed and American Idol sensation Diana DeGarmo.
6 p.m. through 8 p.m. - Olympic legends will be on hand for an autograph
session.
9 p.m. - The Olympic Torch will once again pass through Atlanta along
with distinguished guests including Billy Payne, chief executive of the
Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, and bobsledder, Vonetta Flowers,
the first African American to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympics.
The torch arrives on Andrew Young International Boulevard via Marietta
Street. The Torch lighting will be followed by remarks from city and state
officials.
10 p.m. ˆ 10:45 p.m. - The day comes to a close with a musical performance
by rock band Cowboy Mouth on the Great Lawn.
