The world's most popular game and its showpiece tournament will be well-represented in Atlanta. Mercedes-Benz Stadium will host eight matches in the 2026 World Cup, including one of the semifinals. Atlanta received matches scheduled for June 15, June 18, June 21, June 24 and June 27 in the group stage, plus a knockout round match on July 1, a Round of 16 match on July 7, and the semifinal on July 15. Grass will be installed in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in February 2026. Tickets are expected to go on sale in September 2025, with the tournament draw scheduled for December 2025.
FIFA announced what level of matches will be played in each of the 16 U.S., Mexico, and Canadian host cities for the 48-team tournament, the largest World Cup field in history. More than 200 countries will compete for remaining slots in the 104-match tournament. Atlanta Sports Council President Dan Corso characterized the opportunity as "like hosting eight Super Bowls."
Arthur Blank, owner of the Falcons and Atlanta United, stated the selection represents "a momentous occasion and a true celebration of the beautiful game of soccer in our city." Atlanta United has led MLS attendance for seven consecutive seasons, and the city has also bid to host the World Cup broadcast center.
Governor Brian Kemp stated Georgia possesses "world-class venues, accommodations, and unmatched Southern hospitality" to welcome the world. Mayor Andre Dickens noted that "thirty years after the Centennial Olympic Games, Atlanta will once again host a global audience" and emphasized the city's diversity and inclusive growth.
The 2026 World Cup opens June 11 with Mexico hosting in Mexico City. The championship match is scheduled for July 19 in New Jersey, with Miami hosting the third-place match and Dallas hosting the other semifinal on July 14. Dallas will host more matches than any city except Atlanta.
