Atlanta's hotel booking performance for the 2026 World Cup is outperforming nine of eleven U.S. host cities, according to a new American Hotel & Lodging Association report released May 19, 2026. While 80% of surveyed hoteliers nationwide reported bookings below forecast, approximately half of Atlanta's respondents indicated their pace met or exceeded expectations.
The numbers tell the story: 213,000 hotel rooms booked across downtown, Midtown, and Buckhead during the 30-day tournament period, plus 50,000 short-term rentals. Downtown neighborhoods near Mercedes-Benz Stadium have seen a 100% occupancy increase compared to last year. The Metro Atlanta Chamber estimates a $500 million economic impact for the state, with Airbnb guest spending alone projected to generate $70 million in total economic activity.
"They're starting to look at their travel opportunities, and we are starting to see hotel rooms coming off the shelf," said William Pate, ACVB president and CEO, noting that FIFA's phased ticket release created scheduling challenges unlike typical large events.
Atlanta's relative success is credited to strong air connectivity through the world's busiest airport, diversified demand sources, and strategic marketing focused on U.S.-based expatriates from participating nations. Less than 20% of bookings come from international visitors.
Challenges persist nationwide, including visa barriers, elevated airfares, heightened immigration enforcement, and expensive ticket prices averaging $200 for group matches.
