Georgia Aquarium, the anchor tenant of Pemberton Place at downtown's northwest shoulder, is about to add two residents to its cold-water population. The animals are coming from Marineland of Canada, the Niagara Falls, Ontario marine park that closed in 2024 under financial pressure and sustained criticism of its animal care.
The move became possible this week when the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration signed off on an emergency request to relocate the 28 whales still living at the closed park into the United States. Most are bound for the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and two SeaWorld properties, one in Texas and one in California. Two more are headed to an aquarium in Spain. Atlanta's share is a pair of young males: Balor, who is 9, and Zephyr, who is 6. Both are sexually mature.
There is no firm arrival date. Georgia Aquarium says the transport could happen within weeks or within months, depending on how quickly veterinarians can assess each animal and clear it to travel.
Not everyone reads the approval as unambiguously good news. Naomi Rose, a biologist with the Washington-based Animal Welfare Institute, said the odds of some of the whales dying during transport or shortly after are, in her words, "extremely high" — these are animals that are not well, she said, and transport is stressful for the species. She has also urged the receiving institutions not to breed the whales, arguing that they carry a genetic predisposition to disease.
For downtown, the practical effect is a modest but real change to the single most-visited building in the district. Georgia Aquarium sits at the top of the tourism spine that runs from Centennial Olympic Park past the World of Coca-Cola, and its beluga habitat is one of the exhibits that distinguishes it from every other aquarium in the Southeast. Adding two more animals deepens a signature attraction at a moment when downtown is trying to hold onto the visitor volume the World Cup summer delivered.
The thing worth watching is the handoff itself. A 28-animal dispersal across four countries is an unusual logistical undertaking, and the health of Balor and Zephyr on arrival will say more about how this went than any of the paperwork filed in advance.
