Joystick Gamebar closing its Edgewood Avenue location

After 14 years of quarters, cabinets, and cocktails, one of Edgewood Avenue's defining bars has hit the continue screen.

Joystick Gamebar on Edgewood Avenue, the arcade bar that closed its longtime location after 14 years

An era on Edgewood Avenue has ended. Joystick Gamebar, the arcade bar that helped define the corridor's nightlife identity, announced via Instagram that it would close its longtime home after 14 years, with July 12 as the final day of service at the Edgewood location.

This isn't a game-over story, though — it's a save-and-quit. The bar says it will reopen elsewhere, with the new location to be revealed soon. No reason for the move was given in the announcement, and the owners kept details close; Rough Draft Atlanta noted it will report the landing spot when it's revealed.

It's hard to overstate what Joystick meant to the Edgewood strip. When it opened in 2012, the formula — vintage arcade cabinets, pinball, and a legitimate cocktail program in a narrow brick room — was still novel in Atlanta, and Joystick executed it well enough to become a national reference point for the genre. For fourteen years it anchored a corridor that grew a whole ecosystem of bars around it, through the strip's booms, its rough stretches, and its recent rebound alongside Sweet Auburn's storefront revival.

The closing also says something about where the corridor is now. Edgewood's first-generation pioneers are hitting the age where leases, buildings, and business models turn over; some institutions renew in place, and others — like Joystick — take their brand equity somewhere new. Fourteen years is a remarkable run for any bar, let alone one built on machines older than many of its customers.

So: one last high score on Edgewood, and a continue screen somewhere else in the city. We'll track where the cabinets land — and downtown would happily take the quarters.
