A new boutique hotel and restaurant have opened in Atlanta's South Downtown neighborhood, adding to the area's momentum as it undergoes major redevelopment. The 122-room Origin Hotel Atlanta, a Wyndham Hotel, opened in a 74-year-old brick building on Mitchell Street, the main artery of the South Downtown development.
The hotel's restaurant, Social Capitol American Bistro, opened as well, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner just off the lobby. The restaurant includes a full bar and a casual menu of Southern food, with items like pulled pork sliders, fried pickles and a pickled peach flatbread.
Nearly 60 restaurants across Georgia won Wine Spectator awards this week. Eighteen Atlanta-area restaurants won the Best of Award of Excellence, with local winners including Atlas, Bones, Canoe, Lazy Betty and White Oak Kitchen & Cocktails. No Georgia restaurant has yet earned Wine Spectator's Grand Award.
Several Atlanta-area restaurants offered deals for National Chicken Wing Day, including Wylie & Rum in Reynoldstown, Ponko Chicken, Taco Mac and Twin Peaks. After a fire in downtown Madison damaged several restaurants owned by MAD Hospitality, The Sinclair reopened and Betty Gene's plans to operate as a pop-up while Community Roots Market targets a summer reopening.
In other news, Souper Jenny will close its Brookhaven location with plans to relocate to Chamblee, Mascogo Tacos in Decatur announced a permanent closure, and Gluten Free Atlanta Festival is planned for Sept. 28 at Monday Night Brewing's West Midtown location.
