Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians moving between downtown and Midtown get one more west-side option this month. Midtown Alliance says the two-block extension of 15th Street is expected to be finished by the end of August, carrying the street past West Peachtree Street — where it previously dead-ended — over to Spring Street and Williams Street.
That matters for anyone coming up from downtown. Spring and Williams are the Connector-adjacent pair that funnels traffic along the west edge of Midtown, and until now 15th Street simply stopped before reaching them. The extension stitches the grid back together at a point where the street network has been broken for decades, giving another east-west crossing on a side of Midtown that has been rebuilt heavily in recent years.
The completed street is not car-only. Midtown Alliance says the extension will open to pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike, and the work finished over the past few weeks included bike lane markings alongside roadway striping, landscaping and signage. That puts it in line with the multimodal standard Midtown has applied to its recent street rebuilds, and it is the kind of connection useful to someone walking or riding between downtown, Georgia Tech and the Arts District rather than only to someone behind a wheel.
The project has taken nine years to reach this point. It dates to 2017, when the extension was awarded a grant through the Atlanta Regional Commission covering part of the design, engineering and construction cost. City, state and federal money filled in the rest of the funding stack. The completion date was disclosed in Midtown Alliance's latest newsletter.
For downtown readers, the practical takeaway is small but real: a new place to cross Midtown's west side, and one less missing block in the street grid between the two districts.
