Mailchimp's $12B sale shows Atlanta's tech mettle

Intuit's $12 billion acquisition of Atlanta-based Mailchimp — one of the largest exits for a homegrown tech company — marks a milestone for the city's tech ecosystem, which has grown largely independently with entrepreneurs like David Cummings reinvesting returns into local ventures.

Mailchimp's $12B sale shows Atlanta's tech mettle

Silicon Valley's Intuit agreed to purchase Atlanta-based Mailchimp for $12 billion in stock and cash, marking one of the largest acquisitions of a homegrown tech company. The digital marketing firm grew organically over two decades without external investor backing.

As part of the agreement, Intuit will distribute $300 million in restricted stock among Mailchimp's 1,200-person workforce, with 900 employees based in Atlanta. Co-founder Ben Chestnut, 47, declined to specify how many workers would become millionaires from the sale. The acquisition demonstrates Atlanta's expanding prominence as a technology hub, following other notable exits like Kabbage's acquisition by American Express in 2020.

The city has cultivated its tech ecosystem largely independently, with successful entrepreneurs reinvesting their returns into local ventures. Dave Cummings founded Atlanta Tech Village after selling Pardot, which has since incubated over 300 companies raising approximately $1.2 billion collectively.
