Navigate Atlanta: ATLDOT Launches a Single Hub for Traffic, Transit and Closures

The city has folded real-time traffic data, a Citymapper trip planner and downloadable navigation guides into one page — arriving just as school traffic returns and Downtown construction multiplies.

Navigate Atlanta: ATLDOT Launches a Single Hub for Traffic, Transit and Closures

The Atlanta Department of Transportation has launched Navigate Atlanta, a digital hub that pulls live transit tracking, route planning and downloadable navigation resources onto a single page. For a Downtown in the middle of simultaneous rebuilds — Five Points, the Rapid A-Line platforms, ongoing ATLDOT resurfacing — it is an attempt to answer the question residents and visitors keep asking separately: what is closed, and how do I get around it?

What is on the page

The hub is organized into four sections: Traffic Updates, Getting Around, What’s Happening, and an FAQ. Three tools do most of the work:

  • Real-time travel information through 511GA, Georgia’s official source for live traffic and travel conditions.
  • An embedded Citymapper trip planner, which lets you compare travel times across modes and route around active closures. ATLDOT recommends the full Citymapper app for the complete feature set.
  • Text alerts for traffic updates and road closures — text “JOIN” to 470-524-7673.

Downloadable navigation guides round out the set, including an Atlanta match schedule tied to next summer’s World Cup.

The timing is the point

ATLDOT is framing the launch around the return of the school year. “More students, buses, pedestrians and families are back on Atlanta’s streets,” the department notes, with guidance that reads as three habits rather than three rules: plan ahead and check traffic before leaving; slow down through active school zones and crossings; and share the street with people walking, biking, and getting on and off buses.

For Downtown specifically, the launch lands in a week of overlapping disruptions. Peachtree Street and Williams Street are under an ongoing 24-hour closure near 134 Peachtree St. NW for building inspection and restoration work, with detours posted. Decatur Street and DeKalb Avenue have nighttime lane closures for drainage work, which mostly bites traffic arriving from the east side. And construction has resumed on the Downtown Rapid A-Line stations, where work at the Five Points and City Hall platforms is pushing riders to temporary boarding stops while crews install real-time passenger information displays. Both stations stay in service; riders are told to allow extra time and follow posted signage.

Why a hub instead of another map

Downtown has never lacked for travel information — it has lacked for one place to find it. 511GA, MARTA’s app, ATLDOT’s closure notices and event-specific detour plans have historically lived on separate sites with separate update cycles. Consolidating them matters most to the people least equipped to hunt: visitors arriving for a convention or a match, and residents whose usual route disappeared overnight.
