What it is
The building at 190 Walker Street is a small condominium community: nine homes inside a three-story brick warehouse in the Castleberry Hill Historic Arts District. It went up in 1927, built by the Massell Realty Company for the United States Bedding Company, which made Sealy mattresses here for distribution around the Southeast. The apartments were sold as individual condos in 1997, and the owners have run the building as the 190 Walker Street Condominium Association ever since.
A century on Walker Street
The building’s website keeps a detailed history timeline, and it reads like a short tour of downtown industry. After the mattress makers moved on, the space handled Chrysler parts distribution in the early 1930s (the old lettering is still visible on a back door), then housed a pants maker, two paper companies, a venetian blind supplier, a furniture warehouse and a lighting company. In 1991 Walker Street Partners bought it and turned the upper floors into nine apartments.
The neighborhood
Castleberry Hill takes its name from Daniel Castleberry, an early merchant who owned the land along this rise of Walker Street, and it was named a city historic district in 1984. Walker and Nelson streets are lined with nearly unbroken rows of two- and three-story brick warehouses, most of them from the 1920s, which gives this stretch its steady, industrial look.
