Cosm Atlanta screens Big Wave: No Room for Error on Thursday, September 3 at 12:30 p.m., a one-hour documentary built for the venue's 87-foot LED dome.
The film follows Tahitian surfer Heimiti Fierro at Teahupo'o, the reef break on Tahiti's southwest coast that has a claim on being the heaviest wave regularly surfed. Teahupo'o does not peel so much as detonate: the wave draws off a shallow coral shelf and throws a barrel thicker than it is tall, which is why the wipeouts there are measured in injuries rather than in wasted rides. The title is not marketing copy.
What makes this worth a trip rather than a stream is the format. The Cosm Shared Reality projection wraps the image past the edge of peripheral vision, so a wave that would be a rectangle on a laptop instead fills the field of view — the closest most people will get to the scale of the thing without paddling out.
Cosm sits in Centennial Yards, and the venue runs a full bar and kitchen if you want to make an afternoon of it.
