Ranger Hannah Palmer of the Department of Urban Springs and Trees Atlanta’s Chris Hrubesh lead a walk through downtown in search of the water the city was built on and then buried. Atlanta has no river and no port; it exists because of a rail junction laid across a ridge, and the springs that fed the early settlement are still down there under the pavement.
The group starts on Decatur Street across from Walter’s and works its way across downtown, reading the street grid for the creeks underneath it and looking at the canopy work now going in above.
Two hours, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wear shoes you can walk in. Meet on Decatur Street SE, a block from Georgia State MARTA.
