A few blocks east of downtown, Sweet Auburn is adding another round of attainable housing.
Dignitaries including Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens led a groundbreaking for McAuley Station Phase II, a four-story multifamily building at 300 Chamberlain St. carrying rent restrictions on nearly all of its apartments.
Phase II calls for 97 apartments reserved for residents aged 55 and older, sitting just north of the Mercy Care clinic on Decatur Street. The project takes over a vacant lot that occupies most of a block, shared with Liberty Baptist Church.
Like the first phase, McAuley Station is a partnership between Atlanta-based healthcare provider Mercy Care and Philadelphia-based developer Pennrose. Phase I delivered 170 mixed-income apartments to the same community.
The pairing of a clinic and age-restricted housing on adjacent blocks is the point rather than a coincidence — it puts residents most likely to need regular care within a short walk of it.
