The Peach Drop — the Southeast's signature New Year's Eve celebration — returned to Underground Atlanta on December 31, 2024, after years of on-and-off hiatuses that had left downtown without its most visible annual tradition.
Mayor Andre Dickens made the announcement in December, framing the return as part of the city's broader revival: "It is my pleasure to bring this beloved tradition back to the heart of downtown Atlanta during its truly historic and transformative renaissance."
The Lineup
Big Boi — the diamond-selling rapper, producer, and one half of OutKast — headlined the event. Neon Trees and Res rounded out the musical performances, with Atlanta native radio personality Ryan Cameron serving as emcee. Live Nation produced the event, bringing professional-scale production to a celebration that has historically ranged from polished to chaotic depending on the year and the organizer.
The main event remained unchanged from its classic format: a giant peach descending from a tower more than 100 feet tall at the stroke of midnight, visible from blocks around Underground Atlanta. Tens of thousands of attendees were expected.
The Tradition
The Peach Drop has been one of downtown Atlanta's most recognizable events — a Times Square–style countdown that gives the city its own national-broadcast New Year's moment. But the event's history has been uneven. Organizational challenges, funding gaps, and the pandemic interrupted what should have been an annual institution. The 2024 return, backed by Live Nation and championed by the mayor's office, represented an attempt to stabilize the event and make it permanent again.
For Underground Atlanta — the venue where the Peach Drop has historically been held — the event's return added another layer of activity to a property that has been rebuilding its identity through grassroots arts, music venues, and community events. A successful Peach Drop brings the kind of concentrated foot traffic and media attention that Underground needs to sustain its revival.
