A downtown Atlanta landmark near City Hall is being converted into senior housing. Developer Gorman and Company, which specializes in affordable housing, plans to restore Trinity United Methodist Church at 265 Washington Street and build new residential structures on the property.
The $29.4 million project will create 54 senior housing units, with 48 of them reserved for households earning between 30 and 80 percent of the area median income. Affordable rents start at $495 a month for a one-bedroom at 30 percent AMI — compared to roughly $1,700 for the same unit at market rate. Invest Atlanta has approved $2 million in Eastside Tax Allocation District funding toward the project.
The Gothic-style sanctuary, designed by architect Walter T. Downing and completed in 1912, will be restored and converted into a 4,000-square-foot event space so the Methodist congregation can continue holding services there. New construction behind the historic building will hold most of the residential units, sitting above 16 parking spaces, with a fitness center, clubhouse, business center, and picnic pavilion planned for residents.
Construction is expected to take about 18 months, with completion targeted for 2027.
