The Healey Building

Downtown's 'Grand Old Lady' — a full-block 1913 tower (one of Atlanta's last great pre-WWI buildings, on the National Register) converted to 106 loft condominiums in 2001. The Fairlie-Poplar core, steps from Woodruff Park and Five Points MARTA.

The Healey Building

What it is

The Healey Building at 57 Forsyth St NW sits in the Fairlie-Poplar District. Completed in 1914 and designed by Walter T. Downing with Morgan and Dillon, it was the last major skyscraper of Atlanta's first great building boom before World War I, and it was nicknamed “the Queen of Atlanta” when it opened. Today it is home to condominiums, and the site belongs to the condominium association.

History

The original plan called for twin towers joined by a rotunda, but the war changed the design. Only the west tower and the rotunda were built, and the death of William Healey in 1920 ended any chance of finishing the project afterward. The building takes its name from Thomas G. Healey and his son William T. Healey, contractors and business leaders in Atlanta. The association quotes historian Dr. Elizabeth Lyon, who wrote that the building has an elegance and high-shouldered dignity that make it outstanding among its contemporaries.
