Forget the one-night blowout. Atlanta's turn as a FIFA World Cup host city is built to breathe — a month-long run of peaks and valleys that has more in common with a sprawling music festival than with a Super Bowl weekend.
That is the picture William Pate, the long-serving president and CEO of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, sketched for Axios: visitors arrive a couple of days ahead of each match, fill the city through game day, then thin out while anticipation resets for the next one. The wave pattern is expected to build across the group stage before cresting at the semifinal.
Between match days, downtown will hardly be idle. Fan Fest takes over Centennial Olympic Park, State Farm Arena has concerts on the calendar, and watch parties will carry the matches being played in other host cities. Participating nations are staking out fan hubs of their own around town — Spain, scheduled for another match at Atlanta Stadium, has already planted its Casa España in South Downtown.
Pate envisions crowds circulating in a loop — hotels to bars to Fan Fest to the next gathering — rather than surging in and out of town. And one quirk of Atlanta's setup works in the whole region's favor: because the matches and nearly all of the fan programming are concentrated downtown, the tournament may put less strain on metro Atlanta's roads than a typical mega-event.
The takeaway for locals: pace yourselves. This is a 34-day residency with some very big headliners, and downtown is the main stage.
