Eight Things You Did Not Know About Mercedes-Benz Stadium

Beehives, an urban garden and the busiest turnstiles in North America — the stadium's stranger statistics.

Eight Things You Did Not Know About Mercedes-Benz Stadium

Everyone downtown knows the retractable roof. Here is the rest of it.

It is the busiest stadium in North America — more than 14 million guests since it opened in August 2017.

Its sustainability record is genuinely unusual. Mercedes-Benz Stadium was the first professional sports stadium in North America to reach LEED Platinum, the first stadium anywhere to reach TRUE Platinum for zero waste, and remains the only venue in the world to achieve LEED Zero. It diverts more than 92 percent of its waste from landfill.

It farms. An urban garden on site produces 650 pounds of food a year, and three beehives next to it make 30 pounds of honey each, annually.

It feeds people. In a single year the stadium donates 50,000 pounds of food — close to 42,000 meals for Atlanta families.

It is a repeat title host — the first stadium to host two College Football Playoff National Championships.

It is also a gallery. A partnership with the Savannah College of Art and Design put work from 54 artists in the building, including a 35-foot mirrored soccer ball.

And the attendance record is not a football game. Ed Sheeran's 2023 concert drew 76,335 — the stadium's single-event concert record, on a stage that has also held Taylor Swift, the Rolling Stones and Beyonce.
