Atlanta is the best sports business city in the United States. That is not civic boosterism — it is the finding of Sports Business Journal, which named Atlanta No. 1 in its 2026 Best Sports Business Cities rankings, ahead of New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.
For its fourth annual edition, SBJ evaluated 2,384 markets that host at least one professional or Division I collegiate program. Atlanta's top finish was credited to its venues, its unusually entrepreneurial team ownership, a deep bench of corporate sponsors, and public officials willing to chase events.
Downtown is the reason
Read the criteria and the ranking is really a description of a few square blocks. Mercedes-Benz Stadium and State Farm Arena sit within a short walk of each other on the western edge of downtown, with the Centennial Yards Entertainment District filling in the ground between them. The 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Aflac Kickoff Game, the Peach Bowl and the Celebration Bowl all land in the same footprint.
The corporate half of the equation is downtown too. The sponsors SBJ counts — Coca-Cola, Delta, Home Depot, Aflac, Chick-fil-A — are headquartered in or beside the city they sponsor, which is why Atlanta punches above markets several times its size.
What it is worth
Rankings are marketing. But this one arrives while downtown is mid-transformation, and it is the sort of third-party proof point that moves conversations with tenants, developers and event organizers who are deciding where to put the next thing.
