Downtown's Post-World-Cup Booking Sheet: Five Championship Events Already Locked in Through 2031

The stadium district does not get an off-season, and the next five title events are already on the calendar.

The fan festival barricades are down and the international press has flown home, but the booking sheet for Atlanta's stadium district is not remotely empty. Five championship events are already scheduled between this August and the spring of 2031, and four of the five land downtown.

The nearest is not one of them. The PGA Tour Championship returns to East Lake Golf Club this August, as it does every year, putting the top of the men's professional field on the oldest golf course in the city. It is the reliable annual anchor that keeps Atlanta on the national sports calendar between the bigger one-offs.

December brings the Cricket Celebration Bowl to Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the postseason national championship game for HBCU football and one of the more genuinely Atlanta events on the schedule. A month later the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl fills the same building in January 2027 with a College Football Playoff game, continuing a run that has made the stadium a fixture of the postseason bracket.

The marquee date is February 2028, when Super Bowl LXII comes to Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the building's second turn hosting the game. The first, in 2019, is still the benchmark local organizers cite when they argue Atlanta handles crowds better than cities twice its size, and the World Cup just gave them a fresher data point.

Furthest out is April 2031, when the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Final Four returns for the fifth time in the city's history. That is a decade-spanning cadence, and the spacing is the point: hotels, restaurants and the downtown convention corridor get a predictable series of peak weekends to plan capital against rather than one spectacular month every generation.

Read together, the list is the argument downtown boosters have been making all summer. The World Cup was not a one-off proving exercise; it was the biggest item on a calendar that keeps refilling itself, and the infrastructure the city built to handle 500,000 fan-fest visitors does not go into storage afterward.
