An affordable housing venture is filling a long-vacant site about a block south of Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Lewis Crossing, planned for 420 Chapel Street just east of Northside Drive in Castleberry Hill, would replace a fenced, gravel lot that has sat vacant for more than 15 years, apart from occasional use as parking.
Plans call for 50 apartments across a five-story structure atop a level of underground parking, developed by Woda Cooper Companies -- the same firm behind the recently completed Stanton Park Apartments in Peoplestown. Invest Atlanta estimated Lewis Crossing's total cost at roughly $22 million, and was considering a Westside TAD Ascension Fund grant of up to $1 million to help get the project started; federal and state tax income credits were expected to cover about $18 million of the total.
The building will offer one- to three-bedroom rentals with a gazebo, community garden, fitness center, community room, and laundry facilities -- all set aside for households earning between 50 and 80 percent of the area median income, with the affordability period locked in for 30 years. The location carries a "very walkable" Walk Score of 88 and an "excellent" Transit Score of 74, with two MARTA stations within a 10-minute walk. Construction was scheduled to start in March 2025, with an 18-month build-out to follow.
