Atlanta has a name for the Labor Day weekend collision of conventions, concerts and college football that lands on Downtown every year, and it is not a flattering one: Clusterfest. The 2026 edition runs Thursday, Sept. 3 through Monday, Sept. 7, and both MARTA and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport are telling people to plan around it rather than through it.
The airport expects 2.3 million passengers
Hartsfield-Jackson, the world’s busiest airport, is preparing for an estimated 2.3 million passengers between Wednesday and the following Wednesday — about a 1 percent increase over last year, and one of the heaviest stretches on its calendar. Airport officials say Friday will be the single busiest day, with more than 335,000 passengers projected to move through the terminals.
Their guidance is blunt: arrive at least two hours before a domestic departure and at least three hours before an international one. Check luggage before arriving where possible, and budget extra time for parking, curbside drop-off and pickup, and ground transportation.
Where the trains actually put you
MARTA is adding rail service plus extra staff and security at high-ridership stations on Saturday and Sunday. The agency published station-by-station guidance for the weekend’s marquee events:
- Dragon Con — Thursday, Sept. 3 through Monday, Sept. 7, Downtown Atlanta. Take MARTA to Peachtree Center station.
- Aflac Kickoff Game, Baylor vs. Auburn — Saturday, Sept. 5 at 3:30 p.m., Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Take MARTA to SEC District or Vine City stations.
- Atlanta Hip Hop Day Festival — Saturday and Sunday, Old Fourth Ward Park. Take MARTA to Inman Park/Reynoldstown or King Memorial.
- Pure Heat Community Festival — Sunday at noon, Piedmont Park. Take MARTA to Midtown.
- Big Peach Sizzler 10K & 5K — Monday at 7 a.m. along Peachtree Road. Take MARTA to Chamblee, Brookhaven or Buckhead.
Five Points is still a construction site
The detail most likely to trip up a first-time visitor: because of the ongoing station rebuild, Five Points can still only be entered at Forsyth and Peachtree streets, and its restrooms and customer service windows are closed. That matters on a weekend when Five Points is the transfer point for all four rail lines.
Public restrooms are available at 16 rail stations. MARTA’s SMART restrooms will be open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Decatur, Doraville, East Point, H.E. Holmes, Lindbergh and SEC District. Transit officials recommend downloading the MARTA app to plan trips and check station parking availability, and riders can use the app or call 404-848-4911 to report a problem.
MARTA Reach gets a new fleet
Separately, MARTA announced a service upgrade to MARTA Reach, its on-demand transit service, beginning Saturday. A new fleet of blue Dodge ProMaster vehicles — wrapped in distinct branding, and built for more passenger comfort and improved accessibility — will be deployed across the service’s 12 designated zones. Every new vehicle supports tap-to-ride Breeze card and mobile payment at the door, with traditional cash fareboxes to follow.
“This service has proven to be popular with our customers, and these new vehicles will offer them an even more comfortable ride,” MARTA general manager and CEO Jonathan Hunt said in the announcement. Riders book Reach trips through the MARTA Reach app.
