What it is

The Central Library is the flagship branch of the Fulton County Library System, at One Margaret Mitchell Square. The official page lists general collection browsing and checkout, children's and teen departments, the Best Buy Teen Tech Center, and Special Collections that include the Margaret Mitchell archives and genealogy materials.

It also offers event space and meeting rooms, computers, WiFi and printing, art exhibitions and cultural programming, plus research assistance and interlibrary loan.

downtownATL History

  • The Young Men's Library Association, founded in 1867, ran a subscription library at several downtown locations before settling on Church Street and Forsyth Street. Fulton County Library System
  • A Carnegie library with a marble facade opened on that site in 1902, and the South's first library school began there in 1905. Fulton County Library System
  • The current building was designed by Marcel Breuer with Hamilton Smith, dedicated on May 25, 1980 and opened to the public on May 27, 1980. Fulton County Library System

  • Fulton County voters approved a bond referendum in November 2008 that set aside $50 million for the Central Library. The renovation added natural light, a new grand staircase and a fifth-floor conference center. Fulton County Library System
