Coca-Cola Film Series: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920)
The 1920 silent horror classic starring John Barrymore screens at the Fox with live accompaniment on the Mighty Mo organ.
The Fox Theatre's Coca-Cola Film Series turns to silent horror on Tuesday, October 20 with the 1920 adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
John Barrymore's performance is the reason the film survived: he plays the transformation with almost no makeup in the early stages, contorting his own face and posture on camera while the audience watches a man become something else. A century later it still reads as unnerving.
The Fox screens it the way it was meant to be shown — accompanied live on the theatre's 1929 Möller pipe organ, the Mighty Mo, whose console rises out of the pit before the film starts. It is one of the few working situations in the country where a silent picture and its original instrument still share a room.
The show begins at 8 p.m. at 660 Peachtree Street NE.
