Underground Atlanta is scheduled to gain a new entertainment room on March 20, when Altar is set to open its doors inside The Masquerade.
The Masquerade, the Atlanta music venue, organizes its spaces as themed rooms. Its lineup already includes rooms called Heaven, Hell and Purgatory, and Altar is the latest name to join that set.
Altar will hold up to 250 people. The Masquerade will curate the room's live performances, which are expected to cover a variety of acts. Comedy will come from a separate team, with the former owners of the Atlanta Comedy Club curating those acts.
What the room will offer
Among the features described for Altar are state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems. The room is also slated to have a full kitchen serving a wide selection of food, and the menu is expected to include healthy plant-based options.
Part of the Underground redevelopment
Altar is the newest project to come out of the redevelopment initiative that investment company Lalani Ventures is leading at Underground Atlanta. The stated aim of that effort is to improve the Underground Atlanta experience for locals and visitors alike.
Mary Turner, senior vice president of Lalani Ventures, addressed the opening in a press release. "We are thrilled to welcome Altar to Underground Atlanta," she said. Turner described the room as a significant milestone in the company's ongoing work to revitalize the historic district, adding that it gives creative forms of expression a platform.
She also credited The Masquerade's role in that work. "With the help of The Masquerade, we look forward to shaping the future of Underground Atlanta as a cultural hub for generations to come," Turner said.
For people heading downtown, the opening adds one more place inside Underground Atlanta where live music, comedy and a kitchen share the same address, with doors scheduled to open March 20.
