Chef Fuyuhiko Ito has opened Sozou at 1020 Spring St. in Midtown, the third and final restaurant he is running inside Portman Holdings' Spring Quarter development. Sozou occupies a ground-floor space at the Ten Twenty Spring office tower and serves dinner Tuesday through Saturday, 5:30 to 11 p.m. The restaurant enforces a smart-elegant dress code and does not admit athletic wear.
The kitchen is built around two things: a sushi bar and a robatayaki program cooking over binchotan charcoal on a robata grill. The menu runs from sousaku nigiri and other sushi to larger plates, including a branzino grilled whole and cooked to order. The dressed avocado salad that appears on every Ito menu carries over here. Pastry chef Lisa Ito closes the meal with a parfait of vegan coconut ice cream, guava sauce, pineapple confit, four flower sorbet and macadamia nut brittle.
Sozou joins two other Ito-backed rooms in the same building, both on the eighth floor of Ten Twenty Spring. Celestia is a rooftop cocktail lounge with wide views over Midtown, and ISHIN by Ito is a 16-seat omakase counter. Between the three, Ito now runs a sushi bar, an omakase room and a bar program in a single tower.
The wider Spring Quarter dining lineup is filling in quickly. Mexican restaurant Habaneros opened in June, and Pataaka, a family-style Indian restaurant from chef Anish Nair, opened the same weekend as Sozou. A third location of the Buckhead steakhouse Hal's is slated to open next year in the former Patterson House space, which would complete the development's restaurant roster.
Portman Holdings, the Atlanta-based developer, broke ground on Spring Quarter in 2022. The project takes in the Sora residential tower, the Ten Twenty Spring office building and the Patterson House, formerly the historic H.M. Patterson & Son Spring Hill Chapel funeral home on Spring Street. For downtown residents and workers, Spring Quarter sits a short trip up Spring Street, and its restaurant cluster is now one of the denser concentrations of new dining within reach of the central business district.
