Bubbles, Spinning Tops, Glowing Pines, and Misting Mushrooms: Two Years of ART in the PARK at Woodruff Park

From Mike Stasny's 30-foot 'Millennial Pink' in August 2024 to LeMonde Studio's crank-operated 'Misting Mushrooms' in summer 2025, Woodruff Park's rotating ART in the PARK series turned downtown's central green into an outdoor gallery.

Bubbles, Spinning Tops, Glowing Pines, and Misting Mushrooms: Two Years of ART in the PARK at Woodruff Park

Woodruff Park has always been downtown's living room. For the past two years it has also been its gallery. ART in the PARK, the rotating public-art program run by the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District's arts and activation team, has cycled a new large-scale installation through the park roughly every season, each one launched with a free opening party and each one designed to be touched, climbed into, or played with rather than merely looked at.

The run began August 29, 2024, with 'Millennial Pink,' a 30-foot inflatable sculpture of big, bouncy bubble shapes by artist Mike Stasny - a tongue-in-cheek tribute to a generation and the shade of pink that came to define it. The launch party featured giant bubbles, a bubble-gum-blowing contest, free snacks and sparkling drinks, and live music.

On October 3, 2024, 'Taina Night Glow' by ARRRTADDICT lit up the park after dark: a luminous wooden forest inspired by Puerto Rico's El Yunque rainforest and created to honor Caribbean Indigenous culture, with dance performances and sets by Chunky Sounds and DJ Dell Harris.

November 2024 brought 'Los Trompos,' the internationally touring installation of larger-than-life woven spinning tops by Mexican designers Hector Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena. Visitors could climb inside and spin. Its November 7 opening doubled as a Dia de Muertos fiesta, with mariachi, folk dancers, stilt walkers, Mexican street food, and free face painting; the piece stayed through November 30.

For the holidays, artist Eddie Farr installed 'Radiant' along the park's central path: towering conical light sculptures that spiral upward like pine trees swaying in wind, glowing warmly from within. The December 5, 2024 opening paired holiday treats with a custom musical composition and dance performances, and the work remained through January 17, 2025. Farr would return to downtown in June 2026 with 'What We Weave,' the light sculpture that marked the Stitch's arrival at Mayor's Park.

Valentine's Day 2025 brought an inflatable interlude, 'Stem by Stem - Alien Boy Gives Me Flowers,' before the spring installation opened April 3, 2025: 'Pros and Cons,' Esteban Patino's sculpture garden of bold abstract forms, presented with the gallery Dashboard. DJ Santiago Paramo played, Vice Tacos served, and the first 100 guests made take-home mini sculptures signed by the artist.

Summer 2025 belonged to 'Misting Mushrooms' by LeMonde Studio - seven-foot mushroom sculptures with a mechanical crank that, when turned, released a cooling mist, lit up, and played music. 'Part cooling station, part musical playground, and all wonder,' the district wrote, describing it as art you can play with and 'art that plays back.' The mushrooms stayed through August 30, 2025.

The series shares the park calendar with free yoga, live music, Doggy Con, and the district's Halloween and holiday programming, and its 2025 Impact Report counted 37 hours of free yoga taught in Woodruff Park alongside 4,328 square feet of new murals downtown. The installations change; the idea does not. A downtown park that gives people a reason to linger is the point, and for two years the art has been the reason.
