What it is
Castleberry Hill is the old warehouse neighborhood on the southwest edge of downtown, with Peters and Walker streets at its heart. It takes its name from Daniel Castleberry, an early settler who owned the rise of land along Walker Street, and it grew up beside the railroad that still sets the angle of its streets. Most of its early 20th-century warehouses are now lofts, a shift that began in the 1980s. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and is Atlanta’s eighth Landmark District. The neighborhood association describes it as the most complete warehouse district still standing in the city.
Art and events
The easiest way to get to know the place is the Second Friday Art Stroll, held from 7 to 11 p.m. on the second Friday of every month. It’s free and self-guided: start at any participating spot and wander from there. Recent stops have included Nina Baldwin Gallery, Old Rabbit Gallery, Besharat Gallery, Peters Street Station, the Bookstore Gallery and Atlantucky. Once a year the neighborhood also opens private lofts, working studios and galleries for the Castleberry Hill Loft Tour & Wine Tasting, scheduled for Saturday, October 24, 2026.
Before you go
The neighborhood association posts monthly stroll highlights on Instagram and keeps a calendar and business directory on the Castleberry Hill website. Loft Tour tickets and participating stops are listed on the Loft Tour site.
