What it is
The Municipal Market has stood at the corner of Edgewood Avenue and Jesse Hill Jr. Drive since 1924. That year its fireproof brick hall replaced the open-air market farmers had set up after the Great Atlanta Fire of 1917. Locals call it the Curb Market, a name adopted in the 1990s that remembers the era when Black vendors had to sell along the curb outside. Today about thirty local businesses fill the hall.
What to do
Come hungry, or bring a shopping list. Butcher and seafood counters share the floor with produce stands, sweets makers and a few retail shops. The eateries run from soul food and cheesesteaks to fresh juice and fried chicken, and Afrodish Restaurant is among the merchants. EBT cards are accepted.
Before you go
The market is open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is closed on Sundays and on some holidays. Individual merchants set their own hours, so if you are making a trip for one vendor, check its profile on the market’s website first.
Getting here
The Atlanta Streetcar’s Sweet Auburn Market stop is right across the street. MARTA riders can transfer to the streetcar at Peachtree Center, or get off at Georgia State station and walk about five blocks along Jesse Hill Jr. Drive. The market has its own lot on Jesse Hill Jr. Drive, and merchant validation lowers the rate for the first hour.
