AB Cookie Co. began the way a lot of small businesses did in 2020 — except owner-operator Delronda Grant did not start baking out of boredom. She started as a way to process the loss of her mother, Angela Brown. The initials do double duty: her mother's name, and "absolute best."
"We put love in each of our cookies," Grant told Atlanta Magazine.
After selling online and from a table at the Municipal Market twice a week, Grant opened a full-size stall there in June — sited between City Produce and Phew's Pies, in the former home of Panbury's.
What is in the case
Eight to ten cookie flavors rotate weekly, alongside cinnamon rolls and peach cobbler. The 3.5-ounce cookies come out warm, with milk available. Regulars go for the Loaded Chocolate Chip — walnuts, oatmeal and hand-chopped chocolate — and the Banana Pudding cookie topped with white chocolate and vanilla wafer. Red Velvet and Strawberry Shortcake come and go; peanut butter and oatmeal raisin stay put.
Cookies are baked in house through the day, including a Brown Butter Chocolate Chip drawn from Grant's memory of her great aunt's kitchen.
Why it matters
The Municipal Market has spent a decade rebuilding its stall roster one operator at a time. A pandemic-era home baker taking over a permanent space in a hundred-year-old market is exactly the kind of graduation that keeps the building alive.
