Haley Smalls
Toronto R&B singer-songwriter Haley Smalls headlines the intimate Altar room at The Masquerade.
Haley Smalls plays Altar at The Masquerade on Wednesday, October 7.
The Toronto singer-songwriter writes R&B with the edges left rough — spare production, a lot of open space around the vocal, and lyrics that tend to land somewhere between confession and accusation. She has spent years writing for other artists, and it shows in the construction of her own material: the hooks arrive early and the arrangements refuse to over-decorate them.
Altar is the smallest of The Masquerade's rooms, a low-ceilinged space that seats nobody and puts the front row within arm's reach of the mic stand. For a singer working this quietly, it is the right room.
Doors are at 7 p.m. at 75 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW.
