Smidley plays Purgatory at The Masquerade on Saturday, October 24.
Smidley is Conor Murphy's outlet away from Foxing, and it exists precisely because it doesn't have to carry that band's ambition. Where Foxing records get built into sprawling, orchestrated things, Smidley songs stay scrappy — power-pop hooks, a lot of fuzz, lyrics that undercut themselves before they can get precious. The project has been running long enough now to have its own audience rather than an overlapping one.
Purgatory is the appropriate scale for it. The room rewards a band willing to be loose, and Murphy's between-song register has always been closer to a basement show than a stage.
Doors are at 7 p.m. at 75 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW.
