Venturi Bold Brew, the Georgia-based nitro cold brew label, is opening a cafe concept called Caffe Venturi, and the flagship is going downtown. The company is developing the location with Azalea Fresh Market, the grocer that already operates a store at 25 Peachtree St. NW. An exact address has not been released, and the opening is described only as coming months out.
The choice of neighborhood is the interesting part. Independent coffee in Atlanta has historically gone where the residential density already is, which has meant Old Fourth Ward, Grant Park, Virginia-Highland and the Beltline corridor. Downtown has largely been served by chains, hotel lobbies and the occasional heroic one-off. A brand launching a national rollout usually picks the safest possible first address, and Venturi picked this one.
The menu leads with the company's six nitro flavors: Panama Black, Maple Vanilla Chai, Strawberry Hibiscus, Blueberry Basil, Sweet Tea Lemonade and Stout Truffle. The buildout is being described as a mix of retro and modern, which in a district full of mid-century bones and glass towers is at least an honest read of the surroundings.
CEO Jason Scalzo has framed the opening as the start of a movement rather than a single cafe, and credited the Azalea Fresh Market partnership with making the first flagship locations possible. That partnership is worth noting on its own: pairing a beverage brand with an existing downtown grocery operator solves the two problems that kill most downtown food and beverage concepts, which are foot traffic that only shows up on event days and rent that assumes it shows up daily.
Venturi is not stopping here. A full sit-down cafe is planned for Virginia-Highland by the end of the year, and the two Atlanta locations are meant to be the opening move in a national cafe rollout over the next several years. For downtown, the headline is simpler: the flagship is here, not there.
