Dope Coffee Closes Its Downtown Counter and Puts Its Flagship and Roastery in Stonecrest

The hip-hop coffee brand has traded its Azalea Fresh Market counter downtown for a build-out well east of the Perimeter.

Downtown has lost one of its more distinctive coffee operators. Dope Coffee, which opened inside Azalea Fresh Market downtown last year, has shut that counter, and owner Mike Loyd Jr. has confirmed where the brand is putting its money instead: a flagship cafe and roastery now in active build-out in Stonecrest.

Loyd first signaled the move in May, posting to the company's Instagram that the team was leaving in order to find a space that would let it deliver the level of service and hospitality it wanted. The note thanked the downtown regulars directly, pointing to the ratings and reviews the counter collected during its run and to the customers who, in the company's words, believed in what it was building.

What is going up in Stonecrest is a different animal than a grocery-hall stall. The new location is designed to work as production facility and cafe at once, with dedicated roasting and packaging areas alongside a sit-down room, a walk-up bar, specialty coffee and other beverages on tap, and patio seating. Loyd confirmed the project to What Now Atlanta but has not released an address or an opening date.

Dope Coffee built its name on hip-hop-inspired specialty blends and has kept a mobile cold brew bus circulating around metro Atlanta, which is part of why the roastery matters: the brand sells packaged product as much as it sells cups, and a counter inside someone else's market caps how much of either it can move.

The company is not finished with the Azalea Fresh Market relationship. A separate Dope Coffee cafe is still planned for the Azalea location coming to 2080 Campbellton Road in October, in partnership with Savi Provisions, according to the brand's own website. So the split is less an exit from the concept than a relocation of its center of gravity.

For downtown, the pattern is a familiar one worth naming. A small specialty operator plants a flag in a new food hall, builds a following fast, hits the ceiling of the format, and then goes looking for square footage it can control somewhere with cheaper industrial space. Keeping the next Dope Coffee means having somewhere downtown for it to grow into.
