After construction delays and a restaurant that walked away, South Downtown's first new hotel in decades is taking guests.
The Origin Hotel Atlanta, a Wyndham property, opened Monday with 122 rooms in a converted six-story 1950s office building at 110 Mitchell St., about a block south of Underground Atlanta.
Why it counts
The hotel is a rare large-scale, non-governmental investment south of Five Points near the Georgia State Capitol, a stretch where most of the building stock belongs to the state or has sat vacant. Officials describe the property as a gathering spot blending Southern character with bold design, and the lobby is anchored by a towering sculpture from Atlanta artist Phil Proctor titled ATL.
The road here
A year ago the team forecast an October opening. That slipped. In November, all-day restaurant concept Butter and Scotch, from the team behind Che Butter Jonez in Southwest Atlanta, pulled out entirely, citing frustration with construction delays.
The restaurant slot adjacent to the lobby is now filled by Social Capitol American Bistro, described as a fusion of global flavors and Southern hospitality, with a cocktail and dessert program and service from breakfast through dinner.
Rates and details
Rooms with one king bed start at $122 nightly at opening. Premier suites start at $328. The property is pet-friendly.
Timing
The opening lands roughly eleven months before World Cup matches begin in Atlanta, in a district that has been assembling restaurants, offices and now lodging on that same deadline. For visitors next summer, a hotel a block from Underground and within walking distance of Five Points is a meaningfully different proposition than the convention-district properties a mile north.
