The newest addition to Underground Atlanta's roster of restaurants, nightspots, event spaces and galleries is not actually underground, which is rather the point.
Lalani Ventures cut the ribbon Saturday on Utopia, a Latin fusion restaurant and lounge, at an event attended by Mayor Andre Dickens and other officials. Its patio-lined, standalone building overlooks Underground's fountains and anchors the district's Upper Alabama Street section, where it is visible from the street rather than tucked below it.
The concept
Utopia runs seven days a week from 11 a.m. to, in the operators' words, late, serving brunch, lunch, dinner and late-night. The theme is futuristic throughout, described by its creators as a nod to the bioluminescent world of Pandora from Avatar.
The menu is positioned as elevated, with dishes such as Wagyu beef served on a hot stone for an interactive presentation, alongside vegan options, hookahs, and both cocktails and mocktails.
The daytime problem
Utopia's real assignment is the clock. Underground's nightlife program has worked, drawing roughly a million visitors last year, but the hours before dark have stayed thin. A restaurant open from late morning is a direct attempt to fill them.
Shaneel Lalani, CEO of Lalani Ventures, said Utopia begins a new push to activate Upper Alabama Street and pull pedestrian traffic to Underground across the full day rather than only at night. The company has separately signaled interest in building a restaurant row along the same stretch.
Timed to next summer
The opening lands about 14 months ahead of World Cup matches downtown, and Lalani made the connection explicitly, saying the district is transforming its experience and will be ready for the tournament and the other events headed to the city.
The space Utopia occupies was vacant as recently as last September. Its exteriors have been remade entirely.
