The retail wave running through intown Atlanta this year is not confined to downtown's core. At Krog District - the mixed-use hub straddling the BeltLine's Eastside Trail across Inman Park and Old Fourth Ward - a season of openings kicked off this week, and the list runs from flame-grilled chicken to coolers.
Nando's PERi-PERi held its grand opening Tuesday, taking the former Bar Mercado space inside Krog Street Market next to Superica. The South African chain, built around the Bird's Eye chili and a distinctive flame-grilled preparation, opened its first restaurant in Johannesburg in 1987 and now operates in 24 countries across five continents. It entered the U.S. market in Washington, D.C., in 2008 and counts close to 50 American locations - and now one in Georgia.
Outdoor retailer YETI follows with a grand opening June 18 through 21. The Austin-based brand is taking the ground-level corner space at Lake Avenue and Krog Street formerly occupied by Outdoor Voices, bringing its coolers, drinkware, bags and packs to one of the district's most visible corners.
Later this month, the long-vacant BrewDog space gets an occupant. LikeMinds, the pop-up from Westside Motor Lounge's Kelly Campbell, will claim the full 14,700 square feet - patios included - that the brewery chain abruptly gave up in March. The concept pairs live music and rotating food-and-beverage offerings from local restaurants with billiards, bar games and an upgraded setup for watching sports. Its lease runs through the end of the year, and a project representative says the operation will assess around the 120-day mark whether to continue.
Rounding out the year, Eggslut plans a fall opening for its second Atlanta location, taking a space facing the Eastside Trail in the SPX Alley retail row next to dog bakery and groomer Woof Gang. The chef-driven, egg-focused chain opened its first Atlanta location at the new Moxy Atlanta Downtown.
Charlotte-based Asana Partners completed The Krog District in early 2023, replacing a gravel lot and a cluster of industrial buildings with retail, office and parking wrapped around Krog Street Market, the food hall that helped establish the corridor. The wider district also takes in the adaptive-reuse Atlanta Stove Works and the townhome-and-retail combination at SPX Alley.
