Fairlie-Poplar District

Historic neighborhood developed in the late 1800s as Atlanta's original business district, known for its Flatiron Building (predating New York's by five years), revitalized with artist studios, galleries, restaurants, and gas-lit streetlamps.

Fairlie-Poplar District

What it is

Fairlie-Poplar is the compact grid of historic streets in the northwest corner of downtown Atlanta, and it rewards anyone willing to wander on foot. After the Civil War the district was rebuilt in brick, stone and cast iron, which earned it a reputation as Atlanta’s “modern fireproof business district.” That architecture still sets the tone today, now mixed with galleries, studios, restaurants and nightlife.

What to do

Performing arts anchor the neighborhood. The Rialto Center for the Arts brings in jazz, world music and dance from national and international artists, while Theatrical Outfit stages independent plays at the Balzer Theater at Herren’s. For big-name concerts, check the calendar at The Tabernacle, a former church reborn as a music hall.

Between shows, look up and around: murals and street art turn up on building walls throughout the district, and the storefronts along Broad Street are home to local favorites for a quick bite. Listen for live music during the weekly lunchtime concert series.

Before you go

Part of Georgia State University’s campus sits within Fairlie-Poplar, so weekdays bring a steady flow of students alongside office workers. The Flatiron Building, only 11 stories tall, is an easy landmark to orient yourself by as you explore.
