What it is
Village Books is a neighborhood bookshop on Mitchell Street in South Downtown, built around the idea of celebrating gifted voices, literature and culture. The shelves range widely, from bestsellers and classics to history, personal growth and books centered on Black culture, and the shop also carries its own branded apparel and bookish gifts like totes.
For readers and writers
The store invites its community to take part, not just browse. Readers can recommend a favorite book through the shop’s website, self-published authors can apply to collaborate with the store, and anyone with an idea for an author talk or reading can submit it through the Host an Author Event form. If you write, it is worth a conversation with the staff.
Before you go
The shop is open Tuesday through Sunday and closed Mondays; Sunday opening is an hour later than the rest of the week. You can also shop the book and apparel selection online at thevillagebooks.shop or reach the store at (404) 800-7284.
Getting here
Village Books sits a few doors from Friedman’s Shoes, so it pairs easily with a Mitchell Street shopping stop. Driving in? South Downtown’s lot at 120 Forsyth St SW is close by, and the first two hours are free, courtesy of South Downtown.
