Resurgence: The Rise of Atlanta on the Global Stage

An immersive Rich Godfrey exhibit and civic panel at ATV Sylvan asked what the 1996 Olympics really left Atlanta — eleven days before the city's first World Cup match.

Resurgence: The Rise of Atlanta on the Global Stage at ATV Sylvan
Atlanta Tech Village's South Downtown campus opened its Sylvan building for Resurgence: The Rise of Atlanta on the Global Stage on Thursday, June 4, 2026 — an immersive art exhibit by Rich Godfrey paired with a panel on what the 1996 Summer Olympics actually left behind, staged eleven days before Atlanta's first FIFA World Cup match. The framing was deliberate. Godfrey was a creative force behind Atlanta's 1996 Olympic bid, and the exhibit treated the Games less as nostalgia than as the hinge moment when a regional Southern city was handed a global audience and had to decide what to do with it. The works were mounted inside the historic Sylvan Hotel building at 235 Mitchell Street SW, a few blocks from the venues and streets the Olympics remade. The panel that followed put that question to people who have each handled a piece of it. Historian and content producer Sophia Dodd moderated. Jon Birdsong, CEO of South Downtown, spoke to what the post-Olympic decades did — and did not do — for the blocks that organization is now redeveloping. Sarah Dylla, chief operating officer of the Center for Puppetry Arts, brought the perspective of a cultural institution that outlived the Games that helped raise its profile. George Hirthler, writer and producer with Atlanta Story Partners, has spent a career on the language of Olympic bids. Godfrey rounded out the group. Becca Heck hosted. The evening ran on a deliberate rhythm: doors and guided exhibit tours from 5:30, a welcome from Heck and Godfrey at 6:30, the panel conversation from 7:00 to 8:00, and a reception afterward. The through-line was the comparison nobody in the room had to force. In 1996 Atlanta spent years arguing it belonged on a world stage. In 2026 the World Cup arrived as something closer to a given. What the panel circled was whether the city has learned to convert that attention into anything durable — housing, transit, neighborhoods that survive the closing ceremony — or whether the pattern is a burst of investment followed by a long quiet. The Resurgence exhibit stayed up after the panel, holding gallery hours Tuesday through Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. through July 30, 2026. Atlanta Tech Village — Sylvan is at 235 Mitchell Street SW, Suite 235a, at the corner of Ted Turner Drive.
