El Tesoro

What it is

El Tesoro South Downtown is the newest of the restaurant’s three Atlanta locations, on Mitchell Street SW. El Tesoro means “the treasure,” and the story started in 2018 with a family’s recipes from Guerrero, Mexico, served from a 14-seat counter. This location has plenty of indoor seating and a large covered patio, and the restaurant describes it as a short walk to Mercedes-Benz Stadium and State Farm Arena.

Food and drink

The menu is built around street-style tacos, including barbacoa de res, puerco verde, tinga de pollo, carnitas, fried mahi mahi and shrimp, plus tamales in the Guerrero style, mulitas and big burritos. The restaurant notes that its burrito was voted best by Atlanta Magazine readers in 2023. Behind the bar, it highlights a deep tequila and mezcal selection and margaritas, with bartenders happy to build a flight.

Events and catering

A Sunday brunch buffet runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the regular menu is not served during it. The team also handles catering, private parties and patio events. The patio is not pet friendly.

Where to park

South Downtown - Elm Lot (170 Mitchell St SW) is the nearest of the four South Downtown lots offering two hours of free parking — about a 2-minute walk from here. Two hours free, then standard rates; read the signs when you arrive. Elm and Redbud have a four-hour limit; for longer visits, the South Downtown - Dogwood Lot is the only one of the four without it.
