Atlanta City Council designated historic South Downtown as the city's first open container neighborhood, allowing residents and visitors to carry alcoholic beverages on public sidewalks and streets throughout the district starting April 15, 2026.
The district encompasses the 16-acre South Downtown development area between Underground Atlanta, Five Points MARTA station, and Centennial Yards — covering 57 buildings across approximately 10 blocks of historic structures dating to the 1870s.
"My goal is to make sure downtown Atlanta is a destination," said Councilmember Jason Dozier, who championed the legislation.
The approval reflects broader municipal investment in the area, including affordable housing projects, street improvements totaling over $120 million, and a new municipal grocery store. The open container designation is designed to increase foot traffic and create a festival-like atmosphere as restaurants and bars open along Broad Street and Mitchell Street.
Separate legislation also introduced a temporary entertainment district with extended open container provisions running June 11 through July 19 — the full duration of Atlanta's World Cup matches. Approximately 300,000 visitors are expected downtown during the tournament's eight games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The policy follows models in cities like Savannah and New Orleans, where open container districts have successfully driven tourism and nightlife economies. For South Downtown, it means visitors can carry a drink from Brewhouse Pub to Founders Green to Smorgasburg without interruption.
