Delilah's Everyday Soul has picked 227 Mitchell Street, on Hotel Row in South Downtown, as the home of its first full-service restaurant. The brand has so far operated as a food hall stall, and Rough Draft Atlanta reports the sit-down location is expected in early 2025, with a Winter 2025 opening noted alongside the address.
The new space puts Delilah's next to a business it already knows well. It will take over a space beside Tyde Tate Thai Kitchen, which also neighbors Delilah's at Chattahoochee Food Works.
Family recipes from a Philadelphia name
The restaurant is named for Delilah Winder, a Philadelphia restaurateur and cookbook author, and is owned by her daughter, Delana Winder Reeves, and husband Jason. The kitchen leans on family recipes for its soul food and Southern cooking. The menu includes Winder's bone-in fried chicken and her award-winning mac and cheese, which Oprah once called "best in the nation."
Beyond those signatures, diners can expect fried seafood plates, sandwiches and a smash burger, along with Southern sides that include collard greens, candied yams and cornbread.
As of September 2024, Delilah's food stall locations include Chattahoochee Food Works in Underwood Hills and Politan Row at Ashford Lane in Dunwoody. Another stall is slated to open in fall 2024 at Politan Row at Colony Square in Midtown. Rough Draft Atlanta has contacted Delana Winder Reeves for more on the South Downtown plans.
A historic block taking on new tenants
The restaurant becomes part of the redevelopment of Hotel Row, which ranks among the oldest commercial strips left in Atlanta. Many of the two- and three-story storefronts and old hotel buildings on this section of Mitchell Street go back to the turn of the century, and they still carry original design and architectural details. (For more on the block's past, see Hotel Row and Mitchell Street through the years.)
In December 2023, Jon Birdsong and David Cummings, the founders of Atlanta Tech Village, bought the Hotel Row and South Downtown redevelopment project from the German developer Newport RE, as covered in Atlanta Tech Village founders emerge as buyer for South Downtown. That project takes in 56 buildings. The new owners intend to carry on the sympathetic renovations Newport started along Hotel Row, with the aim of keeping the historic character of the century-old corridor intact.
Delilah's will join a growing roster on Mitchell Street. Tyde Tate Kitchen, Spiller Park Coffee (read about its opening) and the Atlanta Tech Village coworking space are already open there.
Also due in fall 2024 is Crates, a record store from Darryl Harris, who owns Moods Music in Little Five Points (earlier coverage). It will open at 215 Mitchell St. Where Moods Music carries mostly new vinyl, CDs, turntables and books, Crates will sell used vinyl records along with home goods and music-related merchandise.
Rough Draft Atlanta says more restaurant and retail announcements for Hotel Row are expected in the coming weeks.
