If the mainstays are why stadium-side downtown works on a Tuesday, this list is why it suddenly works on every other night too. Atlanta Magazine's companion roundup catalogs ten restaurants that opened recently within a 20-minute walk of Mercedes-Benz Stadium — and the geography tells the story: South Downtown and Centennial Yards account for the bulk of it.
South Downtown claims three of the five featured spots. Broad Street BBQ (nine minutes, opened June 1) brings Jason Furst and Sam Pinner's smoked pork sandwiches, brisket platters, and a collard green lasagna to a counter-service room with a 16-seat bar and takeout window beside Five Points station. On Mitchell Street, Kitchen Counter (15 minutes, opened June 7) pairs Todd Ginsberg of the General Muir with Josh Kim of Bloom Roadside for all-day breakfast, congee, bibimbap salad, and matzo ball soup. And Mule Train on Broad Street (14 minutes) is Michael and Shyretha Sheats' Southern vegetable-and-bean-driven kitchen — butter beans and fried quail at a meat-and-three lunch, prix fixe at dinner.
Centennial Yards adds the other two headliners: Khao Thai Isan (10 minutes), the Pattharakositkuls' upscale Northeastern Thai spot with laab duck and Crying Tiger beef plus beer towers, and The Irish Exit (10 minutes), a 4,735-square-foot pub from the team behind New York's The Dead Rabbit, pouring Guinness and Dead Rabbit Irish coffee alongside toasties and sausage rolls.
The quick-mention five fill in the map: American Dive (18 minutes), the Jagger Suite rooftop at the Moxy (15), Mastro's Steakhouse at The CTR (10), Pepper's Hot Dogs in the Flatiron (19), and The Junction (13).
Ten legitimate openings inside a 20-minute walking radius of one building is the kind of density downtown hasn't seen in decades. The World Cup may have set the deadline — but these kitchens are here for what comes after.
