What it is
Zoo Atlanta sits in historic Grant Park, just southeast of downtown, and makes an easy add-on to a trip built around Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola or Centennial Olympic Park. It is open year-round, closing only on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
What to see and do
The daily schedule is packed with free keeper talks and demonstrations: rhinos, tigers, Komodo dragons, elephant care, gorilla training sessions and gorilla feedings, plus bird shows and small-animal presentations. Paid add-ons include giraffe feedings, rides, a behind-the-scenes tour of the animal health center, and Wild Encounters with animals such as lemurs, warthogs and elephants. Use the Zoo’s online itinerary builder to line up the talks you want before you arrive. After hours, the Zoo hosts ticketed events, kids’ evening programs and overnight stays.
Before you go
Plan on roughly three hours for a typical visit. The Zoo stays open an hour later on weekends than on weekdays, and last entry comes 90 minutes before the grounds close. Some animals head in for the night half an hour before closing, and food stands shut an hour early, so arrive earlier if feedings and meals matter to you. Alcohol, balloons, scooters and skateboards aren’t allowed.
Getting here
The Zoo’s official parking is in two paid City of Atlanta lots: one on Cherokee Avenue and the Grant Park Gateway garage on Boulevard.
